Leaders in Christian circles do not typically talk about the topic of power among leaders and much less about the abuse of power. Someone once said that the way a person manages power is the true test of their character and leadership. Unfortunately, we are reluctant to talk about power and its abuse. As followers of Jesus, we should follow his example of loving leadership.
We asked the President of the Inter-European Division, Mario Brito, to make some comments on the topic.
How can we as a church help to prevent abuse of power in our midst?
Mario Brito: Abuse of power is in striking contrast to the principles of the Bible, the teachings, and the example of Jesus. The two fundamental principles of God's moral law are to love God above all things and our neighbors as ourselves. As leaders, we ought to teach and win the heart of people, leading them to do their best through mutual respect and loving submission to each other. No coercion should be imposed.
The way to prevent any abuse ought to start with each one of us emulating Christ's example, who gave up all His rights and privileges as God and became a servant of human beings to save all – those who accept Him – from selfishness and eternal death.
