For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Luke 19:10, KJV
I love potatoes. Anyone who really knows me knows that I can never seem to get enough of them. The one thing that you can always find in my kitchen? Potatoes. Potato salad, potato pie, creamy-style potatoes, red skinned potatoes, herbed potatoes, mashed potatoes, grilled potatoes, or just plain old fries. I love them all.
However, as much as I love potatoes, there is one kind of potato I can do without and that is a rotten potato. You may be thinking, that’s not strange, no one likes a rotten potato and indeed that is true, however, in my case it can seem somewhat extreme. Even if it is just a small section of the potato, instead of cutting it off and throwing that part out, I am always ready to throw the entire potato out.
When I am peeling a potato, my husband knows very well that if he hears his name being called with urgency and desperation, it usually means there is a rotten potato or a rotten spot, and I am calling him to deal with it. After he handles the problem, I go back to being happy again while continuing to prepare my potato dish.
One day as I was cooking, I thought about myself as a potato with not just one but many rotten spots of sin. The difference is that God is the cook in the kitchen preparing me for the banquet table in Heaven. But instead of throwing me out, which He has every right to do, He cuts away the sin because He sees the good in me. Although it’s a painful process, He knows that once He cuts out the sin, I am as good as new. And with the right ingredients, I can be presented at the banquet table. I am so thankful that God sees the good in us, sinful though we may be, and He is willing and able to make us good as new and worthy to be used for His service.
So, the next time you are preparing a meal and you happen upon a rotten spot on your favorite fruit or vegetable, just cut it out and remember that God sent His Son to cut out the sin in your life and to save the lost (rotten potatoes) of this world.
