Herzenskinder – Children of the Heart

Considering that English is the language we use to communicate in the Inter-European Division and on this site, although it is not the language of any of our countries, we recognize that we should not ignore the other languages. This is a recommendation for a book in German. The book gives insight into the project of the Baby Hatch at Waldfriede Hospital that has just been closed, as you have been able to read in our recent news post. Also available in Czech language.

Children of the heart: The founder of the first clinic baby hatch tells of abandoned children, mothers in need, and the gift of a future.
Gabriele Stangl is a warm-hearted and energetic woman who has helped countless women and families in great need. As a chaplain at the Waldfriede Hospital in Berlin-Zehlendorf, she accompanied pregnant women who had no support or care, who were desperate and completely on their own. And whom she often had to turn away.
The reports of abandoned or killed babies are deeply shocking. However, few people are aware of the hardship that the mother and the unborn child go through beforehand. Against this background, Gabriele Stangl and a dedicated team of supporters set up the world's first baby hatch in a clinic in 2000. At last, mothers were able to place their children in safe hands when they didn't know what to do!
Read about the fates of the children that Gabriele Stangl was able to take into care and accompany against all resistance from the authorities and politicians. How did the children find out about their origins, about their moms, and how did this shape their lives with their future families, their heart moms? Emotionally gripping, this book outlines energetic support for the weakest and most needy in our society.
