Phone booth transformed to public bookcase

Community served by church initiative in Tübingen, Germany

Through the initiative of the Women’s Ministries group in the Tübingen church the whole church joined forces to install a yellow phone booth on the street in front of the church property to serve as a public bookcase. People can pick up books and either keep them or bring them back, or even place their own books there, creating a cycle of exchange. The inauguration of the booth was embedded in a whole weekend program “About Books”, including a Choir Concert on May 27, and a street festival on May 28 with lots of visitors. The program included a Bible Exhibition “Bibles of my Life” with personal Bibles; Bible Art Journaling with the leader of Women’s Ministries in Baden-Württemberg, Jasmin Stanoschefsky; a reading with the author Titus Müller who presented his new book “Der Tag X” (the Day X) about events around June 1953 in East Berlin; an exhibition of heartshaped pillows sewed by the women; lots of games and activities for children as well as good food and refreshments. The day’s activities culminated in a balloon start. In spite of all the work involved the event will be remembered as a source of joy and gratitude.
