Interview with Valérie Duval-Poujol

The Swiss Espoir Médias channel is producing a series of interviews with authors of interesting books with Yolande Grezet as host of the program Lire D-livre.
One of her guests is Valérie Duval-Poujol whose book "La Bible est-elle sexiste?" was released in January 2021. Is the Bible a sexist book? is a book that takes the reader through the Bible and demonstrates that God is not sexist and that the Bible, if understood and translated correctly is not a sexist book either. The translators of the Bible did their best according to their abilities to make the biblical text available in other languages, but they were influenced by the culture in which they lived, thus often not understanding the text correctly. Valérie Duval-Poujol shows God as the Creator who made man and woman in His image as equals with the same commission.
For a long time, the Bible was considered to justify and encourage the domination of men over women. However, a careful reading of the first chapters of the Bible and the New Testament reveals a completely different reality. Far from being male-oriented, these stories express a positive and liberating message for women.
In her book, "La Bible est-elle sexiste ?" Valérie Duval-Pujol proposes a renewed reading of the biblical texts that encourage women to fully realize their vocation. She demonstrates that no one can use the Bible to suppress women in society or marriage. Equal to men in rights, value, and dignity, nothing and no one should prevent women from putting their gifts at the service of the community and the church if they wish to do so. She shows a theological and exegetical approach that reveals how erroneous biblical interpretations have been used to prevent the essential gender equality intended by God.
Valérie Duval-Poujol is a Baptist theologian specializing in the Bible, and she holds a doctorate in the History of Religions from the Sorbonne and in exegesis from the Institut Catholique de Paris. She teaches textual criticism of the New Testament and the Septuagint at the Institut Catholique de Paris as well as in several Protestant theological faculties, among them the Adventist Theological Faculty in Collonges-sous-Salève.
She coordinated the revision of the Bible translation la Bible en Français Courant, which resulted in the release of the new version la Nouvelle Français Courant (NFC) in September 2019, published by Biblio. It is an ecumenical translation, easy to understand, and widely distributed.
Valérie Duval-Poujol is also the author of numerous books, and she is committed to raising awareness of spiritual and sexual abuse among the Christian public and to issues related to the place of women in the Church. In this context, she founded the association Une place pour Elles.
