Heart Pillow Project at the HopeCenter Herne, Germany

Practical Help for Mastectomy Patients

In 2022, the HopeCenter Herne started the long awaited heart pillow project in a small sewing circle. The first 75 heart pillows went to the Breast Center/Senology in the Holweide Clinic Cologne. The heart pillows were received with great joy by the Breast Care Nurse Sabine Esser. The small consolation cards attached to each individual pillow are also a nice gesture. The group is inviting more people to join them to provide help in a very practical way.
Why a heart pillow? The pillow has the shape of a heart with extended "tips" and is worn by breast cancer patients after surgery under the affected arm. It relieves wound/scar pain and lymphatic swelling or pressure under the arm. The heart pillow makes it easier to lie down and gives some protection during sudden movements or jolts, such as those that can occur when coughing or in everyday life, and can be used as protection under the seat belt when riding in a car. The heart pillow is always a gift, a symbol of warmth and humanity, of hope and confidence, and is intended to show the affected women: "You are not alone!"
