On Sabbath, November 22, at the Adventist church in Sesto San Giovanni, we had a very meaningful day with our guest, Monica Carozzi, Women's Ministries leader for Northern Italy. The theme was based on the fifth commandment: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). The morning message focused on abuse perpetrated against the elderly: physical, psychological, verbal, economic, etc. Three questions challenge us:- What value does the elderly person have for God?- How can we follow the Lord's example?- How can we help? In the afternoon, we took inspiration from the same commandment for a broad and wise reflection on how to care for our parents, the elderly in our community, and all those close to us who, at this stage of their lives, are more vulnerable, fragile, and sensitive. Following Jesus' teaching, we are invited to exercise his love, which helps us to be a support, a discreet, kind, and caring presence. Let us remember that our elderly are a blessing, our historical memory. God appreciates, supports, respects, and esteems the elderly. So must we.
