Activities in Romania on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Street Action in Cluj Napoka

Violence Prevention Day was celebrated in Adventist communities in Romania on November 25, 2023. In the "Speranța" community in Cluj Napoca, the women were involved in a devotional talk and a practical street action. The devotional was led by Simona Anca, Director of the Women's Ministries in the Transylvania North Conference. She spoke about the need for training and involvement in this area, contrasting the needs of the people around us with the fact that Adventists are called, not to be mere spectators, but agents of social change. She called for the transformation of the heart through the Holy Spirit, courage, and introspection. We often think that we cannot do much in our small church communities, but she encouraged all present to “do their best, but do something!” Thus we can be motors of transformation for the better, putting different programs in place.
After the devotional, a team of children, young people, women, and men took to the streets and, with permission from the local City Hall, offered the people of Cluj the booklet "Dynamics of Domestic Violence" (provided by the Romanian Union Women's Ministries Department) and anti-bullying leaflets for children (provided by ADRA Romania).
People on the streets reacted with questions like "Who are you and why do you offer these materials?" Others said, "I appreciate you so much for what you do and how you are involved in society's problems", and "Congratulations." These reactions warmed the hearts of the dedicated team and encouraged them to continue.
The children performed a special skit about a man full of hatred and accusations and how God can change people to show tolerance, friendship, selflessness, respect, and help.
The lunchtime presentation was entitled "Wolves in sheep's clothing", prepared by the General Conference and presented by Liliana Radu (Union Director of Women's Ministries). It highlighted the impact of abuse on people when it is committed by so-called followers of Jesus. A call was made to let the Holy Spirit transform our hearts, not to remain passive when such things happen, and to learn to act promptly and appropriately when necessary and, above all, to follow the example of the Good Shepherd, our Lord Jesus Christ, who was full of compassion for the people around Him.
In the end, Simona challenged those present by asking two questions: "What is the event that led to the establishment of the global Violence Prevention Day?" and "What is the ingredient that differentiates us who read the Bible from other people?" and the correct answers were rewarded with the book "Enough" by Tamyra Horst, a very special book that helps us discover a God who is enough when we are not. Music and poetry performed by children and young women brought a heavenly touch to the atmosphere of worship. We thank God for this wonderful opportunity to serve and wish many blessings to the volunteers involved, as well as those who provided materials and all who received them!
