He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalm 91:1 NKJV
I grew up in a country with two seasons – wet and dry. Then I came to live in America, and there I found four seasons – spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I’ve discovered that life also has seasons. There are those that refer to the stage of life we may be in – childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and old age. It seems to me that women have more seasons of life than men. I’m not sure why.
But there are also spiritual seasons that can also be called wet and dry. There are those times when our spiritual life seems to be parched, and we are always thirsting for God: and those times when we feel abundantly filled with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. But I’ve found that the wet spiritual seasons don’t last as long as the dry spiritual seasons.
I’ve spent many years of my life struggling with this change of spiritual seasons. Sometimes wet, most times dry. As I analyze the different seasons in my life, I find that my wet seasons come when I’m going through the most difficult trials in life. The dry seasons come when I feel that life is going well, and prayer is relegated to morning and evening times, and grace before meals. During times of trial, I find myself praying without ceasing, claiming the promises in God’s Word, and reading the Bible often to gain the strength I need for each day.
I used to complain about the trials in my life. I wondered why God allowed so many trials to afflict me. Many times I felt like a female Job. But I’m older now, and I realize how important it is to live in the wet spiritual seasons of my life. Spending time in the Word has become a habit, not something I must or should do or even need to do, but something I want to do. Why? Because I remember the dry spiritual seasons. Those times when I felt empty, and I knew what was lacking, but I allowed the business of life and the pleasures of this world to distract me, and so I thirsted and became weary in my Christian walk.
I don’t know how it is for you.- But I urge you to live your life in the wet spiritual season. Keep covered by the Word. Keep praying without ceasing. Keep claiming the promises in the Bible each day. Keep putting on the armor of God each day. But most of all, live your life under the shadow of God’s wings.
