Song of David—Psalm 19

Olga Valdivia

The heavens tell about the glory of God. The skies announce what his hands have made. Each new day tells more of the story, and each night reveals more and more about God’s power.

Psalm 19:1, 2, ERV

I have been to many countries and lived in many places throughout my life. Every place on earth has its own measurements of beauty, like no other. There are unbelievably beautiful natural wonders across the world, from the pink lake in Australia and mystical peaks in China, to the ice-blue terraces in Turkey and colorful caves in Chile. But it is always the elusive beauty found in the mellow hours of sundown and sunrise that, like nothing else, captivates my spirit in unique, profound ways.

It is no wonder David felt so fascinated by the trace of the sun in the firmament! To David, each new sunrise exemplified God’s character. Each new sunset further revealed God’s supremacy. Every morning, when David turned his head towards the far east, in the blissful display of gentle beauty brought by sunrise he was able to see God’s hand clearly.

When light, shining down upon humanity in dots of pink and golden blessings touched his eyes, God’s character became luminous and clear to him: God was a God of mercy and justice to all.

The heavens became a sorts of a “miracle box” for David each morning and evening. Its lid opened; its inside exposed to whoever wanted to see, reminding David that God’s mercy towards His children are a continual ritual throughout their days and nights.

Heavens were indeed David’s spiritual classroom. He drew strength in its beauty and comfort in its teachings. In the beauty and mysteries of the heavens, David uncovered the notion that “the Lord’s teachings are perfect,” that “they give strength” to the believer and “help even the foolish understand God’s ways” (Psalm 19:7, ERV).

This Psalm, in my opinion, is indeed one of most poetical and spiritual poem ever written. It is not only a literary work of art, but also a door to God’s secret sanctuary in the candidness of the heavens for all to see.
