Singing With the Angels

Sharon Follett

He has put a new song in my mouth – Praise to our God.

Psalm 40:3 NKJV

Have you thought about singing with the angels? I used to think of singing with the angel choir when I get to heaven but not about singing with them while still on this earth. Yet I recently read, “All the heavenly angels are at the service of the humble, believing people of God; and as the Lord’s army of workers here below sing their songs of praise, the choir above join with them in ascribing praise to God and to His Son.”[1] Wow! This is exciting!

As a choir director of both adults and children, it is awesome to think of angels singing with us. On any given Sabbath, when one of the choirs sings, people come and say, “That music was so beautiful!” Yet I used to wonder what they were hearing because sometimes it didn’t sound that wonderful to me. Now I know: it was because the angels joined with the singers and made it beautiful. Thank You, Lord!

Music is such a wonderful gift given to us by God. Many can worship and grow spiritually simply by singing or playing His music! I love to read stories of how certain musical pieces were inspired. These background stories make the hymns more meaningful to us personally. Many of the classical composers were inspired by God in writing their music too.

I was blessed to grow up in a musical family. We sang together around the piano that our mother played. Our parents sang in the church choir, took voice lessons, gave us piano lessons, bought a flute for each of us, and gave us flute lessons as well. In church school, we grew up singing in choirs and playing in bands. We also presented special music for church, went to nursing homes, and sang at a mission in the city. We loved to share our music!

The Bible tells us to sing “for joy” (Psalm 132:9 NIV), “with gratitude” (Colossians 3:16 NIV), and to “make music from your heart” (Ephesians 5:19 NIV). We are encouraged to “sing praise to him” (Psalm 105:2 NIV) and “sing to the Lord a new song” (Psalm 98:1 NIV).

Let’s sing to the Lord, and let the angels sing with us – even while still on this earth! Then when we get to heaven, we’ll sing with the angels there too! How wonderful that will be!
