And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13, KJV
The workmen had finished their tasks for the day. Renovations on my bathrooms were coming along to my satisfaction. I stepped outside to say goodbye and thank the men for the work completed thus far.
As they drove out of my driveway, I raised my head and there, right before me, was a breathtaking sunset. I grabbed my smartphone and began clicking away. Wanting to get the right angle and position, I ran from the driveway to the left side of the lawn, then ran inside to the bedroom facing the road to get a higher and better view. Still not satisfied, I raced to the attic and got there just as the ball of fire slid gently beneath the branches of some trees. When I reviewed my captures, there were four spectacular shots. I. Was. Ecstatic.
The next morning, while on my daily walk, I reflected on my impromptu photoshoot the previous evening. Without any deliberation, I had sought optimal spots to get a specific view of the sun and thought nothing about running from place to place to facilitate getting great shots. There were no thoughts of my aching back or painful joints. No excuses for pursuing what it took to get the best shots. My determined intent on capturing a spectacular sunset had propelled me, in spite of everything else.
In my pondering, my Father spoke to me. “You see how you chased the sun? That’s how I want you to pursue the Son! He can be everything to you, do everything for you, and give you everything you need.”
Immediately, the trajectory of my thoughts changed. How many times had I rushed off for the day with just a quick prayer, neglecting precious time with my Savior? How often had I attended a business or work event rather than a prayer meeting? How frequently had I rushed past someone in need because I would be late for my appointment if I stopped to help?
As I agonized over my failures, a still small voice reminded me that every day, I have an opportunity to edit my path with God’s grace; that a better life is always waiting for me and for everyone who accepts the call and pursues the Son.
